Dr. Gross is an orthopedic surgeon in the Culver City, CA area. He has many years of experience performing surgeries like patello-femoral arthroplasty. Dr. Gross treats patients in Culver City, Los Angeles, West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Malibu and throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area.
Patello-femoral arthroplasty is the medical term designed for knee cap replacement surgery. The surgery is less invasive than a total knee replacement surgery. In fact, patello-femoral arthroplasty classifies as a minimally invasive procedure. The surgery removes the articular surface of the patella, better known as the kneecap, The surgery is needed for patients who have arthritis involving the patellofemoral joint with the rest of the knee joint being healthy and who remain symptomatic with knee pain inspite of conservative treatment.
KineMatch is a prosthesis designed for those with end-stage patello-femoral disease. KineMatch is custom fitted for the patient based upon a CAT scan of the patient's knee. The KineMatch consists of an all-polyethylene button and a metallic femoral component. It is specially designed to reduce pain while enhancing function. It restores knee kinematics through the rebuilding of the patellar groove. Additionally, it restores the A-P positioning of the patella, so the quadriceps may function properly. The femoral and patella implants are fixed via their pegs using bone cement.
Because it is custom made, people have fewer problems and less pain than when using off the shelf prosthesis. Research and reviews state this cutting-edge implant is clinically proven and ideal for those looking for a better solution than a complete knee replacement. The surgery only takes about an hour. Generally, the rehabilitation needed post-surgery is less for the KineMatch than more the traditional method of a total knee replacement, although the rehab time is fully dependent on the patient's status after the surgery. The patient is typically released the following day after surgery full weight bearing with crutches.
