Synvisc, Cortisone & PRP Injections

What is Synvisc?

Synvisc is a synthetic fluid material that can be injected into the knee joint to help relieve the painful symptoms of arthritis. Made of a substance called hyaluronan that occurs naturally in the body, Synvisc helps supplement the natural fluid in the knee to enable the joint to function without pain for up to six months.

How can I tell if Synvisc is right for me?

Synvisc is typically used in people whose knee arthritis symptoms have not resolved despite taking pain medication, exercising or losing weight (when necessary). Dr. Gross will help you determine if Synvisc injections could be a good choice for you.

What is PRP?

PRP stands platelet-rich plasma. Plasma is one of the primary components of blood, along with red and white blood cells and platelets. Platelets are associate with blood clotting, and they also contain growth factors that play a very important role in healing. PRP is plasma that has been enriched with extra platelets. The concentration of platelets in PRP can be as much as five to 10 times the normal level, which means growth factors are also more concentrated. When injected into a joint following an injury or during surgery, these growth factors can go to work to speed healing.

What are cortisone injections used for?

Cortisone injections are used to relieve pain and inflammation in joints when pain medication doesn't provide relief.  Cortisone injections can be use din almost any joint, including the wrist, elbow, shoulder, ankle, hip, spine and even the hands.

What is PRP used for?

PRP is used to help speed healing in many types of injuries and conditions, including:

  • arthritis

  • fractures

  • acute injuries to ligaments and muscles

  • tendon injuries

  • during knee, shoulder and other types of surgery
